Proud Theater – Madison is currently enrolling young people between the ages of 13 and 18 for its 2013–2014 season.  Founded in 1999, the program is open to young people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning (LGBTQ), who are children of LGBTQ parents, or who are allied with the LGBTQ community at large.

Proud Theater rehearsals for the 2013-2014 season are on Wednesdays during the school year beginning at 6pm on September 11, 2013, and are held at James Reeb Unitarian Universalist Church located at 2146 E. Johnson St. in Madison. To enroll, youth need only contact Proud Theater at 608-222-9086, or by e-mail (info@proudtheater.org), or by simply showing up to a rehearsal. Enrollment ends after November 27.

Empowering and creative, the youth of Proud Theater improvise, create, and perform their own original  pieces of theater, poetry, dance and music that reflect the realities of their young lives. They share their work at performances throughout the year in the larger community, and then traditionally end each season with a culminating showcase production.  This year’s performance will be May 29-30, 2013 7:30 PM and May 31, 2:30PM and 7:30PM at the Bartell theater complex in Madison.

Homophobia presents many challenges in the lives of young people. As a result, these self-described “queer” youth may be more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to experience depression, family estrangement, school problems, and substance abuse. In response, Proud Theater offers encouragement, inspiration, and support on many different levels. It builds upon the youths’ innate resilience—providing them with community, security, peer support, and mentorship. This in turn, contributes to their positive engagement with school, overall health, self-esteem and stability.

Proud Theater is a program of Art and Soul Innovations (artandsoulinnovations.org), and enjoys generous financial support from the Mukti Fund (muktifund.com) and the PFund Foundation (www.pfundonline.org).  The organization currently has three chapters around the state of Wisconsin including Madison, Milwaukee and Wausau.
