Heather Renken has been active in theater since she was 12 years old. She received a Talent Grant to Illinois State University in 1988 and was awarded The Most Significant Contribution to the Theatre Department from Butler University in 1994 where she graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. with honors in Theatre. She was nominated for two Portfolio Awards in 1997 for Best Actress in a Musical and Costume Design.
Heather went on to perform onstage in many productions and work backstage as a Stage Manager, Costumer, Props designer and Mistress, Light board tech for lights and sound and eventually became a Playwright and Director. Heather has written 3 original plays to date, all have been performed at Broom Street Theater. Heather has served on Board of Directors in Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; and Norfolk, Virginia. She currently serves on the board of directors of The Kathie Rasmussen Women’s Theatre, Broom Street Theater and Art and Sol here in Madison, Wisconsin. In 2010 she was appointed Artistic Director of Broom Street Theater in Madison, Wisconsin.
She has taught theater in camps in Chicago, a weekly drama class the YMCA in Sun Prairie Wisconsin and most recently been asked to be a teaching artist for The Children’s Theater of Madison. Her other educational experience includes being a literacy tutor for Schools of Hope and a Sunday school teacher for Bethany United Methodist Church in Madison Wisconsin.
Heather began working with Proud Theater as a mentor and Stage Manager in the fall of 2005.
